Wind, Waves, and a Fight to the Finish

Held on Mactan Island just across the strait from Cebu City, IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu starts and finishes at Mactan Newtown: a single clockwise swim loop through the Hilutungan Channel that separates Mactan from Olango, a fast three-loop bike leg that crosses the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway into Cebu City's South Road Properties before doubling back for more loops, and a looping run along the Punta Engaño peninsula, past the resort strip that lines Mactan's east coast.

In a full edition, that's the usual 70.3 spread: a 1.9km swim, 90km on the bike, and a 21.1km run — and that's exactly what the professional field raced this year. But strong currents and chop in the Hilutungan Channel forced organizers to cut the age-group swim to roughly 1km, crosswinds made the bike loops a fight from start to finish, and a hot, humid midday sun turned the run into its own kind of ordeal. Of the 640 who made it to the start line from 39 countries, nearly one in five didn't make it to the finish. Swim splits below are only comparable within this race, and as a result, the whole race is excluded from our all-time rankings and personal bests. It still counts as a real finish on every athlete's race history, just not as a ranked time.
